In a vast, forested land, people settled and founded a village. However, marauding tribes and the forces of the sea posed a continuous threat to the growing settlement. Throughout history, the village had to be rebuilt time and time again, yet the inhabitants never lost heart. "The New Village" emerged with splendid houses, schools, and churches. Prosperity and a rich community life flourished. The past faded away. Only festivals and fairs, where merriment often prevailed, recalled the distant old times. It was no coincidence that the composer used the same musical theme to depict the turbulent times of the past and the atmosphere of the fairs.
The composition "The New Village" was commissioned by the Province of North Holland for the 15th Niedorp Festival and had its premiere on November 27, 1993.
