Info

Antonio (Lucio) Vivaldi was an important Baroque composer and violinist. He was born in Venice in 1678. His father had a job as a violinist at St. Mark's Basilica. The son showed his talent for music at an early age and is said to have represented his father in the orchestra when he was young. In 1703 Antonio Vivaldi was ordained a priest and then became chaplain at the church of Santa Maria della Pietà. After a short time, however, he gave up the exercise of the priesthood forever because of health problems. He was nicknamed "Il Prete Rosso" ("the red priest") because of his red hair color inherited from his father. At the "Ospedale della Pietà", an orphanage for girls affiliated with the church, Antonio Vivaldi was employed as an instrumental teacher and music director of a girls' orchestra. The orchestra soon achieved a reputation that was legendary for the time and attracted numerous travelers to Italy. He wrote most of his violin concertos and sonatas during this period. Both as a composer and as a violin virtuoso, Vivaldi became a living legend and a "place of pilgrimage" for many musicians from all over Europe. Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel also knew his works. While employed at the orphanage, Vivaldi began composing operas. As a very enterprising opera composer and director, he is said to have performed an estimated 90 operas in Venice and Mantua between 1713 and 1739. Around 1730 a change in musical taste began. His compositions appealed less and less to Venetian audiences. This is probably why he moved to Vienna in 1740 to seek support from Emperor Charles VI. to look for, who died in October 1740. The once best-known musician in Europe remained unnoticed by the music world in Vienna. Antonio Vivaldi died ten months after arriving in Vienna and was buried in a simple grave on July 28, 1741.

His most famous work is "The Four Seasons" from Opus 8, a series of 12 violin concertos from 1725.
